Hi Everyone!
Sorry for the delay. I've ramped up my speed touring this next bit before Italy and as a result I had little time for editing movies and writing blog posts in between exploring, booking, renting, laundry, being seasick (spoiler for today's video), training, and oh yeah... sleeping.
I've finally got some down time now so I am going to try and push hard to get a few of these ready and queued up for you all.
Milos, the bits I saw anyway, was very quant and quiet - certainly not the hustle bustle of tourism happening on Mykonos and Thira/Santorini. I showed up on a Sunday and EVERYTHING was closed except one excellent kabab place.
Ok so the barfing... Until this point I had been ferried around on ginormous catamarans that did excellent against strong waves and big rollers, but this leg between Thira and Milos was on a much smaller boat with much smaller windows. At first I was fine and didn't think much of it, but there was a long stretch out on the open sea not protected by any islands and the waves really started up strong. Yeah, about 10% of the ship turned green like me. There was an Asian couple who either didn't know what was happening to them or were freaking out due to the overwhelming feeling + embarrassment. They didn't seem to know what was happening to them or what to do.
I knew what it was and I went and claimed my toilet stall immediately. For those of you who can't relate or want a refresher in seasickness, here are the general stages:
I'm perfectly fine.
Why do I keep asking myself if I'm OK? I SAID I'M PERFECTLY FINE AND NOTHING WRONG IS HAPPENING TO ME - SO SHUT UP INNER VOICE.
OK, we are not fine.
I'm just going to slowly pack up my items into my backpack while watching the shoreline and I can do this... everything is fine...
Abandon everything and run to the toilet while the ship is swinging around like crazy and somehow hold it all inside.
Stare at the toilet and demand to yourself you aren't going to throw up and start really heavy breathing techniques.
Feel a little bit better and then BAM - the boat hits more huge waves
Start negotiating with yourself please do not throw up, please..... PLEASE? GAH
Now here is when it all flips. It's happening. You switch to just wanting it to happen to be over. Eric! just throw up pal, you'll feel so much better if you just did it.
Then the magic happens.
Feel way better
7 minutes goes by and if the boat has now arrived in the calm waters see step 13 otherwise go back to step 1. (Steps 1 through 11 also take about 7 minutes total for a 14 minute full cycle).
Stand up and instantly feel tired by WAY WAY better and able to control your own body again.
OK. Enough about throwing up. The island was beautiful. The big boat came back the next day to take me from Milos back to Athens and it was back to just a normal uneventful ride - except for seeing some more wonderful islands along the way. I ended up staying in Athens again for a bit and then flying to Dubrovnik!
I've already edited together the Dubrovnik video and it is awesome - just saying. So stay tuned for that one.
Hope everyone is having a good time.
Eric.
