Hi Everyone!
Left Mykonos this morning and got to Thira (Greek name for the island of Santorini) at a decent time - about noon.
Santorini in my head and the real place were not at all the same - but in a good way. I had always pictured little white buildings each with blue domes/roofs. Yes there were a few of those iconic houses, yes mostly all white, but all sorts of other colors and randomness going on. Actually, Mykonos had more of a consistent theme going on I would have to say.
I also had no clue until arriving (and beholding it), that Santorini is all built on steep cliffs AND that those cliffs are all actually the caldera of an ancient mega volcano - very cool.
It was appealing to the geography nerd inside me in many ways. Another way being the ability to see all of the island from almost any point. I could just look out at the amazing view and instantly I would have an exact idea of where I was.
The whole island is supposed to be off limits to drones because of the proximity to the tiny little airport on the far opposite side of the island, but when I got to lookout at Skaros Rock, read the sign that said going on the rock was "Strictly Forbidden", but then saw dozens of tourists and locals ignoring the sign and making their way over to check out the spectacular sunset. With there being an obvious lack of policing in this particular place, I figured I could get away with at least a couple cheeky drone shots.
Y'all better appreciate the time-lapse of the sunset near the end of the video - that was 90 minutes of standing and breathing it all in that ended up being just a few seconds on there. It was beautiful, but Eric moves on to new places long before 90 minutes. Time-lapses like those are going to be pretty few and far between on this trip.
Highlights maybe not fully captured in the video:
Great place for weddings/wedding photos, however, all the great sunset picture spots were absolutely packed with couples and wedding parties all jockeying for the best shots. Anyone thinking to get married there, better go in more of the off season or get married on a weekday maybe lol.
The "road" up and down from the ferries switch-backing against the cliff was a bit nerve-racking - in a giant-ass bus.
Best pizza I've had all trip thus far
My AirBNB was right in the middle of town and was only $35 a night - amazing.
Island of Milos is next for me - tomorrow afternoon.
Hope everyone is doing well!
Eric
